Veil the Dragon by DragonstormStudios Veil the Dragon by DragonstormStudios
I sat on the subway this morning and I felt a great inclination to draw. So I did. I've been thinking about participating in a dA contest so I kept that in mind as I drew. It wasn't crowded in transit but I noticed quite a few people were watching, heh.

I learned that my Day Sign in the Chinese Horoscope is a male Green Dragon, or a Wood Dragon. I decided to draw both.

This is Veil. Notice that in Veil's claws is a Pearl of Golden Amber, which matches his wood-based appearance.

I found it extremely hard to draw him, mainly because the texture was driving me up the wall! But when I finished it (yes I did my first speed drawing) I was very satisfied with the result.

I think my dragons are improving.

[link]

I listened to Dreammaker by Thomas Bergersen (and a little bit of Dragons from Caravan Palace) to give me the strength I needed to finish this beast!)

Media: Polychromos Coloured Pencils on 8.5"x11" gourmet "Blue Granite" paper.
Time: One. Whole. Day.

Edit: I decided to fix this up a few notches. While a white background worked, I think this free texture by [link] Darkwood67 works as well. It helped me clean up the white background which was previously filled with pixels.

Wait, I already favorited this but didn't comment. I must've been in a rush, because, this is really really really good. Like I've been saying a lot lately, the way you work the colors. And what a lovely looking dragon. Just... Damn, girl

Many thanks, Viktor!

Actually, I after finishing this work and adding the background I started to wonder whether or not it would be an interesting idea to keep making art of a similar kind, where there is a single character on a minimalist background. What do you think? Would that be something interesting that you'd like to see in my gallery?

Okay!

Also, Russian folklore from my style, like perhaps the Leshij painting I did, or movie figures like Winnie the Pooh? Perhaps. O:

Aha, the firebird. <3

I understand, and it's quite true. Thing is, Egyptian, Greek, those kind of mythos have been popularized due to films and novels, games. Slavic mythology is not well known simply because it has not been actively communicated through popular media. Now, if something along the lines of Percy Jackson and the Olympians was made to feature Slavic mythology (or even Norse mythology from which Slavic comes to an extent) then we would have a completely different situation. Is that not so?

Very nice! The coloring is gorgeous, you've achieved a nice sheen. The wood detailing on the wings is a nice touch.

Thank you! ^_^

The funny thing about the sheen is that I pressed the pencils onto the paper so hard that the actual work has an oily finish.

You are very talented when it comes to graceful animals, and colored pencil, which I assume this one was drawn with. I also enjoy how you use a simple yet attractive logo as your signature. Sort of like what Zoro did. In my opinion, this is one of those drawings where the more you look at it, the better it gets. I stared at this for a long time and noticed the excellent job in shading, and the way you drew the limbs and fingers, and the pattern on the lower wings was a very nice touch.

Ahh, thank you so very much for the kind words!

In each drawing I try to experiment and study something new while applying old techniques. There is something fascinating in how leather reflects light in a manner that is quite different from how scales do so. So in the picture there is a textural contrast of the scales on the neck, which have a similar colour scheme to the skin of the leg, and that was my experiment. For my next work I'll probably end up studying emotion, but those are words for another time.

Again, many thanks. ^^

I wish I could! The only option available is mutants, I cannot choose anything else. Is something wrong with the submission system?

Ah.... this problem again. Well, try to do it again later, or try another browser. There's this bug sometimes, and I have no idea how to fix it permanently.. Sorry for that.

Ah.... and it allows to post only in mutants? That sucks... Your dragon looks awesome! Well, Ill try to contact the technical support. To be honest, you're not the first one who had this problem.

Thanks Alex! ^_^ I actually never intended to make them so - I drew everything with a black coloured pencil at first and when I went over the wing with red and pink and green I noticed the black stood out in a way that reminded me of wood grain, so I worked with it and did this. c:
